A friend of mine recently asked for my advice re. flying with his two small children.  Yelena & I have flown with Nathan quite a few times, either alone or together, on different airlines, to different places around the world.  Here are our top 10 tips on making it an easy flight:

(1) Many airports have a separate line for families with young children. Rock it.  (SFO does; SAN does not.)

I've been doing photography in earnest for 11 years now, but I've never really worked with video.  When Nathan was born, we bought a camcorder.  There's been a slow dribble of videos making their way to Youtube, but I haven't uploaded much from the past three years.  Part of it was lack of time and computing power, too.  But now I have a fancy new laptop (which I bought for web design) and a 160 minute commute, which I mostly use for web design, but which also leaves plenty of time (and computing power) for other things - like video processing.

Yesterday was Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year.  (Today might be also; depends on how you keep track.)  Yelena & I decided not to go to services this year.  I know, surprising, right?  This from the guy who wears a kippah, keeps kosher, and blesses God three times a day?  Allow me to explain.

You know how I'm a fan of technology, especially my smartphone, so it's not surprising that I've found ways to use it to help me entertain Nathan.  Here are my four favorite resources.

The standard caveat applies: anything screen-based is to be taken in small doses.  I let him online less than once a day, and only for limited periods of time.  Then we read a good old fashioned book, play with Duplo, or build a train set.  A real, physical train set using Brio tracks.

Last week I had a few hours with my laptop and no internet.  The result: I made a good dent in my photo backlog.

When I take photos, I download them (upload?) to my hard drive, where they sit until I've had time to go through them.  Now that folder has thousands of photos going back at least four years.  Many of which I have never even looked at; none of which have seen the light of day.  Until now.
